Oh, joyous day! Derek Zoolander, the original “Me” model, has returned to grace us with his presence, once again proving that he is “really, really, really ridiculously good looking.” Yes, that’s right, Ben Stiller is blue steeling once again in Pepsi’s latest Super Bowl LVII ad, which was released on Wednesday.
But why did Ben Stiller feel the need to resurrect this self-obsessed character in today’s society? Well, according to the man himself, Zoolander would fit right in with our current, self-absorbed culture. Stiller said in an interview with CNN that “The idea of him staring at himself, at his reflection, and just being kind of enthralled by his own reflection is kind of probably a little bit indicative of where we are at as a society these days.”
So, could Zoolander be the original social media influencer? Stiller thinks so, noting that “In the age of social media and selfies, and how people are kind of obsessed with their images, he makes sense now.” And TikTok certainly agrees, with a trend that has users reenacting a scene from the first film.
This begs the question, will there be another “Zoolander” film added to the franchise? Stiller says “you never rule anything out,” but there are currently “no active plans right now.” But, for now, we can enjoy this cameo in the Pepsi commercial and relish in the fact that this beloved movie character remains hilarious.
In conclusion, Zoolander may be 600 years old in model years, but he doesn’t really change and we can’t help but love him for it. Let’s just hope that by now, he has figured out how to turn left.
